Grow your own aromatic grass

Lemongrass and citronella share nearly identical growing needs: sun, warmth, water, and rich soil. Master one and you can grow both — whether that's a tropical backyard clump or a bucket on a temperate balcony.

The fundamentals

What both grasses want

Think "tropical riverbank meadow": bright light, deep moisture, generous feeding, warm air, and roots that never sit in stagnant water.

Sun

Minimum 6 hours of direct light; 8+ is better. Plants stretch pale and leggy in shade.

Warmth

Happy at 21–32°C (70–90°F). Growth stalls below ~15°C; frost kills the tops, hard freezes kill crowns.

Water

Consistently moist, never swampy. Clumps are thirsty — expect daily summer watering in pots.

Feeding

Heavy nitrogen feeders. Compost-rich soil plus balanced fertilizer every few weeks in season.

Container sizing

A single lemongrass clump fills a 40–50 L (10–13 gal) pot within two seasons. Citronella runs larger — start at 60 L (15 gal) or plant it where it has room to reach 1.5 m wide.

Before you plant

Site selection & soil preparation

An afternoon of preparation buys years of effortless harvests. Both grasses forgive imperfect soils but punish wet feet and deep shade.

  • Map the sun. Six hours of direct light is the floor for survival; eight or more builds the dense, oil-rich blades worth harvesting. Pots against a warm south-facing wall (north-facing below the equator) gain weeks of season.
  • Test drainage before anything else. Dig a 30 cm hole, fill it with water, and time it. Still full after four hours? Build raised beds 20–30 cm tall — chronic sogginess kills these grasses faster than drought ever will.
  • Set the chemistry. Aim for pH 5.5–7.5 in loose, humus-rich soil. Work 5–10 cm of compost into the top 30 cm and break up compacted layers that would stall spreading roots.
  • Give clumps room. Space plants 60–90 cm apart in every direction with 1–1.2 m rows for harvest access. Crowding costs airflow — and airflow is disease insurance.
  • Shelter transplants early. Fresh divisions wilt fast in hot wind. A temporary screen or taller companion for the first month makes establishment dramatically smoother.

Test, don't guess

A basic lab soil test costs less than a bag of fertilizer and reports pH plus organic matter. Corrections take months, so sample in autumn for a spring planting — and target at least 3% organic matter.

Watering & feeding, decoded

The difference between a sparse ornamental and a cutting machine usually comes down to two inputs applied at the right moments.

  • Deep and infrequent wins. Soak when the top 2–3 cm dries, then let air back into the profile. Daily sprinkles breed shallow roots and weak clumps.
  • Drip lines are disease control. Wet blades overnight invite every fungal spot in this guide. Soil-level irrigation keeps foliage dry and cuts water waste roughly in half.
  • Baby the first eight weeks. New plants should never dry out completely — check daily during heat waves until roots grab hold.
  • Established beds drink steadily. Budget roughly 25–40 mm of water per week including rain, and step it up after each harvest cut to power regrowth.
  • Pots are another climate. In summer heat, containers may need daily watering until it runs from the drainage holes; in dormancy, barely moist is the target.

Deficiency decoder

Pale older leaves signal nitrogen hunger. Purple tints point to phosphorus lockout in cold soil. Scorched brown margins mean potassium shortfall. Yellow young leaves with green veins indicate iron deficiency — common in alkaline container mixes.

Ongoing care

Clump maintenance & weed control

These grasses ask little once established — but the first year decides whether they get the chance. Slow-starting clumps lose bare ground to creeping weeds within a season.

  • Win the year-one weeding war. Hand-weed or shallow-hoe around young clumps until blades arch overhead and shade competitors out themselves.
  • Mulch 5–8 cm deep with straw or wood chips, pulled back a hand-width from the crown to prevent rot. Mulch holds moisture, feeds soil life, and blocks most weeds outright.
  • Groom quarterly. Strip dead outer blades to the base and snap off flower spikes early — unless saving seed — because flowering drains reserves that would otherwise become leaf.
  • Rejuvenate every 3–4 years. Centers decline naturally as crowns exhaust themselves. Dig the whole clump, split it, and replant only the vigorous outer fans.
  • Contain the footprint. These are well-behaved clumpers, not runners, but they widen yearly — a spade cut around the perimeter each spring keeps borders honest. Containers need dividing or root-pruning every second spring.

Resist the winter tidy-up

In frost climates, leave frost-killed tops standing over winter — they insulate the crown like a duvet. Clear them only after the last frost, when new shoots hint at where the living tissue sits.

Getting started

Three ways to propagate

Seed is possible but slow and unreliable for these hybrids-of-sorts — vegetative methods win by a mile.

The famous kitchen-scrap method. Works with fresh lemongrass stalks that still have their firm base — citronella rarely appears in stores, so use this trick mainly for lemongrass.

  1. Select plump stalks

    Firm bases, no splits, ideally with a bit of root nub. Buy organic if you can find it — some conventional stalks are treated to inhibit sprouting.

  2. Trim and stand in water

    Cut tops off leaving 15–20 cm of stalk; peel one outer layer. Stand 2–3 cm deep in a glass of water on a bright windowsill.

  3. Change water every 1–2 days

    Roots typically show within 5–21 days. Sluggish stalks may take longer; discard any that turn mushy.

  4. Pot up at 2–3 cm of roots

    Plant into moist potting mix with the base just buried. Keep evenly damp and shaded for a week, then graduate to full sun.

Success rate is high in warm months. Stalks rooted this way establish into harvestable clumps within one season.

Spring

Divide crowded clumps, repot into fresh mix, resume feeding as growth restarts, and ease overwintered plants outdoors after the last frost.

Summer

The growth peak. Water pots daily in heat, feed every 2–4 weeks, and start harvesting once clumps pass about 60 cm tall.

Autumn

Take the final generous harvest, taper feeding, and dig or pot up divisions to carry indoors ahead of the first frost.

Winter

Indoors: the brightest window, water only every 10–14 days, no feeding. Warm zones: cut back frost-killed tops and mulch crowns deeply.

This rhythm assumes a northern-hemisphere temperate year — southern growers should shift everything by six months. Frost-free tropical gardeners can ignore the winter row entirely: schedule dividing and renovating around wet and dry seasons instead, ideally at the start of the rains.

A temperate year: clump biomass and cutting windows

  • Wait until clumps are well-established (60–90 cm tall) before the first harvest
  • Take outer stalks only — twist and pull the whole stem from the base rather than cutting mid-blade
  • Never remove more than a third of the clump at once
  • Citronella for oil is cut like hay, whole-top, just before flowering when oil peaks
  • Store lemongrass refrigerated up to 2 weeks, frozen for months, or dried for tea

Harvest timing bonus

Essential oil concentration is highest in late morning after dew dries — harvest tea leaves then for the most aromatic cup.

Freezer trick

Bash and trim a season's worth of stalks, wrap them flat in foil, and freeze — they grate straight from frozen into marinades all winter long.

Pest field guide

In good health, both grasses wear light chemical armor of their own essential oils. Most damage comes from sap-suckers and night-time chewers exploiting stressed plants.

Handle with gloves

Citronella blades are edged with fine silica teeth that can nick skin, and the oil itself irritates some people. Wear gloves and long sleeves whenever you part dense foliage to hunt pests.

Aphids

Spot it: clusters on tender young shoots, sticky honeydew that ants farm, black sooty film following.

Control: knock colonies off with water jets; insecticidal soap or neem for stubborn cases; release ladybugs; skip excess nitrogen that breeds the lush growth they love.

Spider mites

Spot it: fine stippled bronzing across blades with delicate webbing beneath — worst in hot, dry rooms.

Control: raise humidity and rinse foliage weekly; neem or miticidal soap at first sign; isolate infested pots immediately.

Armyworms & cutworms

Spot it: ragged chewing appearing overnight; seedlings severed at the soil line; plump caterpillars hidden by day.

Control: hand-pick at dusk; BTK spray handles real outbreaks; cardboard collars shield transplants.

Grasshoppers & katydids

Spot it: blades chewed from the edges inward, damage accelerating through dry spells.

Control: row cover over young stands; kaolin clay film makes leaves unpalatable; bird perches recruit free pest control.

Scale insects

Spot it: brown or white waxy bumps fixed along stems, with honeydew and sooty mold underneath.

Control: prune heavily crusted stalks into the bin; horticultural oil timed to the pale crawler stage works best.

Root-knot nematodes

Spot it: stunted yellow clumps that never quite thrive; knobby galls revealed when roots are dug.

Control: solarize soil before planting; rotate with marigold; plant clean divisions; heavy organic matter suppresses them.

Termites & white grubs

Spot it: sudden wilt patches in tropical beds; roots chewed or hollowed at inspection.

Control: beneficial nematodes drenched into soil; clear buried wood debris near beds; seek local advice where termite pressure is high.

Slugs & snails

Spot it: seedlings rasped to ribbons; silver slime trails glittering after rain.

Control: beer traps; iron phosphate bait (garden-safe); copper tape around pot rims; torchlit evening patrols.

The pests you won't see

Good news: deer and rabbits generally avoid both grasses — the same aromatic oils that fill your kitchen and candle diffusers taste terrible to browsers.

Bonus: a lemongrass or citronella hedge doubles as a soft barrier protecting tastier neighbors.

Fungal foes

Disease field guide

Humid, crowded, overhead-watered stands grow fungus almost as willingly as grass. Airflow is the cheapest fungicide you own — most prevention below is really just spacing and dry leaves.

Lemongrass rust

Puccinia nakanishikii

Spot it: orange-brown powdery pustules mostly under leaves, ringed by yellow halos; thrives in warm, humid, still air.

Control: choose tolerant varieties; early sulfur sprays; open the canopy by spacing and pruning; remove infected blades; irrigate at soil level only.

Leaf blight & leaf spot

Bipolaris / Helminthosporium spp.

Spot it: elongated gray-brown lesions edged in yellow that merge into whole blighted stretches of blade.

Control: move watering to the soil line; copper fungicide at first appearance; collect and destroy fallen debris rather than composting it.

Red leaf spot

Cercospora cymbopogonis

Spot it: small red-brown flecks swelling into long necrotic streaks after prolonged wet weather.

Control: the same cultural fixes as blight — dry leaves, airflow, sanitation. Severity usually fades once the wet spell passes.

Southern blight

Sclerotium rolfsii

Spot it: sudden collar collapse with a white fan of mold and mustard-seed-like sclerotia at the soil line.

Control: excavate the clump plus surrounding soil; solarize the site through summer; leave the hole empty for a season.

Root & crown rots

Pythium · Fusarium · Rhizoctonia

Spot it: wilting despite moist soil; brown mushy roots; a sour smell where ground stays waterlogged.

Control: drainage comes before any spray — raise beds, amend soil. Lift surviving outer divisions into free-draining ground.

Sooty mold

Secondary fungus

Spot it: black film coating blades slicked by honeydew — harmless itself, but a billboard announcing aphids or scale above.

Control: treat the sap-suckers first; hose off the film afterward; new growth replaces stained blades at the next cut.

When it's viral

Mosaic-type viruses occasionally appear in commercial lemongrass areas: yellow streaking and dwarfed, distorted growth spreading plant to plant. There is no cure — dig out affected clumps completely, never compost them, control the aphid vectors, and start new beds only from clean stock.

Strategy over chemicals

Integrated pest management, simplified

IPM sounds bureaucratic but it's just an escalation ladder: prevent first, escalate only as far as needed, and never skip steps.

  1. Design problems away

    Clean certified stock, generous spacing, drip irrigation, and your sunniest site prevent nine-tenths of outbreaks before they exist.

  2. Patrol weekly

    Five minutes checking blade undersides, crowns, and the soil line catches colonies while they're still squishable. Yellow sticky cards turn flying pests into countable data.

  3. Act physically first

    Hand-pick caterpillars, prune diseased blades into the bin — never the compost — blast aphids off with plain water, and ring vulnerable pots with copper tape.

  4. Recruit allies

    Ladybugs and lacewings handle sap-suckers, BTK targets only caterpillars, and beneficial nematodes hunt grubs underground. Neem covers several fronts while sparing beneficials if applied at dusk.

  5. Spray surgically, last

    Fungicides don't fix insects and vice versa — match product to organism, follow label rates and intervals, rotate modes of action between applications, and spray evenings so pollinators aren't flying through the mist. Sulfur and copper are organically acceptable but can scorch leaves in strong sun above ~30°C.

Companion planting

Both grasses make striking architectural backdrops for basil, peppers, tomatoes, and flowers — and their clumps shelter beneficial insects. Give them the north edge (in southern hemispheres, the south edge) so they don't shade neighbors.

Keep a garden log

Photograph every outbreak with the date and weather. Pests and fungi run on seasonal scripts — this year's notes let you pre-empt next year's repeat instead of reacting to it.
